Why are you screaming into the void?

Johanna Bruun’s visual exploration of living amidst chaos will be published on March 27th 2025.

“I couldn’t help but wonder.”

Johanna Bruun’s new work Why are you screaming into the void? is a visual and philosophical journey into the endless information flood of the modern world and the fascinating, restless spiral of doomscrolling. Nearly 400 pages of images and room-like phrases take the reader deep into the noise of the digital age and the incoherence it creates. The work is guided by a mantra from the early 2000s, the cult quote of SATC character Carrie Bradshaw: “I couldn’t help but wonder.”

“Why do people that are good with money have such psychotic smiles?”

“Why are all the boys still looking for daddy?”

“Why is she trying to cure depression with horoscope?”

“Is war in Europe the ultimate revival style?”

“Is it too late to hakuna matata the fuck down?”

The book is built on both personal and general questions that intertwine with a rich and suggestive visual world. The visuals in the work flow disconnectedly, and no consistent image of the world emerges from the whole. Image and verbal streams overlap in our everyday lives, often in unexpected and disorienting ways.

Johanna Bruun is an artist and designer who primarily uses books and printed materials as her forms of expression. Bruun has worked in art criticism and journalism for over ten years, and she has learned one important thing: asking questions.
